If you are looking to convert your mountain bike to a single speed, one thing you will need is a single speed chain tensioner. Without a chain tensioner, your single speed conversion will not work properly and you will hate your bike.
There is a company called DMR that not only makes a great single speed chain tensioner, but also a single speed spacer kit. DMR sells these items individually, or you can purchase them in a combo kit. I have personally used the DMR chain tensioner on two different bikes, and in both cases, it worked great.
In my case, I paired my DMR Chain Tensioner with a Wheels Manufacturing single speed spacer kit, which was awesome, but if you need both a chain tensioner and a spacer kit, you can save a lot of money by purchasing the DMR Chain Tensioner and Spacer Kit together as a combo kit. Of course, if you prefer you can purchase the DMR Chain Tensioner by itself and pair it with a different spacer kit. In either case, I don’t think you can go wrong.
Most people who convert a triple crankset to a single speed crankset will use the middle chainring. If this is what you are planning to do, don’t forget to also purchase single speed bolts. The reason for this is because the bolts that come stock on a triple crankset are going to be too long with just the middle chainring in place, and your conversion won’t work properly without the right bolts.
Don’t worry about purchasing a single speed chain, as the DMR Chain Tensioner is designed to work with a geared chain. However, you will need a bicycle chain breaker tool as you will need to adjust the length of your chain once you have the single speed conversion kit properly installed. I’ve had bad experiences with cheap department store chain breakers, but something like the Atlin Chain Breaker sold on Amazon should do the job fine.
